Need Addressed:

Incarceration is an epidemic and it is affecting our youth. Nearly 50% of the youth have a parent who is currently incarcerated; 63% have a parent who has been incarcerated; and 67% have a family member who is currently incarcerated. Most disturbing is the fact 25% of the young people at The Potter’s Wheel believe they will spend time in jail or prison at some point in their lives. Peer pressure, poor choices, poverty, abuse, and low family expectations all contribute to a poor self-image which leads to a generational cycle of poverty and incarceration.

Program Description:

EPIC1:3 Equipping (young) People In Christ  is based on Proverbs 1:3, “to acquire a disciplined and prudent life, doing what is right and just and fair…” to help young people find a positive direction for their lives. EPIC 1:3 programs include

The EPIC 1:3 Project teaches Godly principles that help low income, at-risk inner city youth make positive choices instead of negative choices that can lead to poor relationships, poverty, substance abuse and incarceration. This will not only impact each youth’s destiny, but will also  impact the community in positive ways.

EPIC 1:3 currently offers five weekly activity programs for youth. Programs include a Bible message, games, crafts, snacks or a meal. Youth are mentored by Christian adult role models and taught to make positive, healthy choices that will affect their destinies.

  • Monday is EPIC Mission Youth Group – Leadership Training Middle and high school students who are involved in other youth programs form this group. This program serves a dual purpose. The first purpose is to discuss ways to improve other EPIC programs by brainstorming ideas for fundraising and topics for discussion. The second purpose is focused on giving back to the community and volunteering. Basically this is leadership training.
  • Tuesday EPIC is teen night program that includes games, a meal, crafts and a life skills class facilitated by two MSW staff members, USI and IVY Tech student interns.
  • Wednesday after-school program held at Glenwood Leadership Academy is led by the Middle School Youth Leader who is a MSW, a social work student intern and two seminarians from St. Meinrad Seminary. Wednesday evenings is the middle and high school aged SING program (Stopping Incarceration for the Next Generation) designed for youth whose parent(s) or sibling(s) are currently or have been incarcerated. This program is a partnership with the police officers and firefighters at the Guns and Hoses gym. It consists of a boxing program and a support group and/or Bible study.
  • A Thursday evening program is for K-8 students. This program is led by three staff members with MSW degrees assisted by two social work student interns from USI and various volunteers from area schools and churches.

Transportation is provided to these activities. Meals are provided for evening programs.

In addition to these weekly programs, the EPIC 1:3 program collaborates with Evansville Rescue Mission for a week of summer camp at Camp Reveal; volunteers from Turning Pointe Church lead and administer VBS; volunteers from Mt. Pleasant Christian Church organize and host a Christmas party; employees from AT&T and members of the Church of the Harvest provide backpacks loaded with school supplies for over 450 children.

Mission Alignment:

The youth programs align with The Potter’s Wheel Inner City Mission's Mission to transforming lives while meeting the physical, educational, social, and spiritual needs of Evansville’s inner-city youth.

Goal/Impact:

The youth programs at The Potter’s Wheel will work with at-risk inner city youth to help them build social competency, spirituality and reduce risky behaviors in order to make positive choices that will impact their futures.

Outcomes/Objectives:

Youth participating in EPIC 1:3 will complete a survey at the beginning and end of each school year. Results will be:

  1. Seventy percent of regularly attending high school participants will increase their preparation for life after high school from the beginning to the end of the school year;
  2. Seventy percent of regularly attending participants will increase (or maintain the highest level) their knowledge of the Bible during the school year.
  3. Sixty-five percent of regularly attending participants will increase positive character traits (e.g. Trustworthiness, responsibility, caring, respect, fairness) during the school year.
  4. Seventy percent of regularly attending participants will increase knowledge of anger management skills during the school year.

 Outputs:

During 2014, EPIC 1:3 had 3,630 encounters with 421 children. Through September 2015, 286 children participated with 2661 encounters. Projections are that EPIC 1:3 will serve 450 children in 2015.
